Root‐associated fungi not tree density influences stand nitrogen dynamics at the larch forest–tundra ecotone

چکیده

Abstract Greater tree density and forest productivity at the tundra–taiga ecotone (TTE) are expected with climate warming, potential feedbacks to system. Yet, competition for nitrogen (N) may impact TTE dynamics. will likely increase N demand, while reducing supply through soil shading slower decomposition rates. We explored whether characteristics of roots root‐associated fungi important acquisition responded changes in were related above‐ground stand cycling. measured rooting depth, uptake forms among layers ectomycorrhizal (EcM) colonization composition along a natural gradient monodominant larch Larix cajanderi northeastern Siberia. tested relationships between root fungal characteristics, stand‐level cycling parameters. Overall, there was preferential ammonium compared glycine or nitrate. Nitrogen greatest shallow soils organic horizon chemistry, parameters, but direction these depended on form. Uptake different forms, depth EcM not density, correlated chemistry In addition EcM, abundance dark septate endophytes other ascomycetous taxa positively Synthesis . There little parameters suggesting intraspecific amplified increased density. was, however, strong dynamics regardless Together, this suggests an role broadscale patterns forests independent warming.

Late Quaternary variations in tree cover at the northern foresttundra ecotone

[1] Accurate land cover reconstructions are essential to understanding the past and present biogeochemical and biogeophysical interactions between the land surface and atmosphere and the impacts of these interactions on climate. Here we quantitatively reconstruct late Quaternary shifts in woody cover across the Northern Hemisphere forest‐tundra ecotone, based on a synthesis of Northern Hemisphe...

Lower forest–grassland ecotones and 20th Century livestock herbivory effects in northern Mongolia

We studied five lower forest–grassland ecotones in the Darhad Valley in northern Mongolia and investigated the effects of 20th Century grazing regimes and changes in grazing management on ecotone dynamics at a local scale. A total of 2968 Siberian larch (Larix sibirica) trees were cored and tree-age distribution was constructed to determine 20th Century tree establishment. Tree age and location...

Characterizing Changbai Larch through Veneering. Part 1: Effect of Stand Density

Changbai larch (Larix olgensis Henry) is one of the main plantation species in the northern part of China, but so far its utilization has been limited to solid wood, pulping, and paper products. As part of a national initiative, the objective of this work was to develop a good understanding concerning how stand management practices affect larch wood and veneer properties. To cope with the varia...
